In most cases, these pegs are made of (steamed) beech or maple wood. Due to their shape and material, they are ideally suited for use on the beach, in the dunes, and (especially) on boggy ground such as along rivers. If you intend to leave this type of peg in the ground for an extended period, you can paint it with red lead paint or primer (preferably water-based for the environment!), which will significantly extend its lifespan.
