You start with 2 villages on a variable game board featuring fields, meadows, hills, mountains, and forests. When it is your turn, you roll 2 dice to determine who receives resources. This depends on the position of your villages. Afterward, you may trade with the bank or with your fellow players. You do not receive all types of resources automatically, and you do need them to build new villages, roads, and cities. You can also buy development cards to perform special actions. Furthermore, a robber roams around plundering some landscapes.
Villages and cities not only yield resources but are also worth points. Development cards, the longest continuous road, and the largest knight army also bring in points. The first player to reach 10 points wins the game immediately!
The Settlers of Catan is suitable for three to four players aged ten and up.
