Liquid thermometer manufactured according to the idea of Galileo Galilei (1564-1642). Galileo discovered that liquids change their density depending on the temperature. If the temperature rises, the density of the liquid in the thermometer decreases. The comparatively heavier spheres lose buoyancy and sink. Conversely, if the room temperature decreases again, the lighter spheres gain buoyancy and gradually rise. The weight difference of the glass spheres is precisely measured (to one hundredth of a gram) so that the lowest of the floating spheres always indicates the current temperature.
