On the Geislinger Steige: Who doesn't know the mighty Class 194 freight locomotives? Built from 1940 onwards, they were long considered the ideal workhorses for heavy freight service. The last examples were retired from service with Deutsche Bahn (DB) in May 1988. Before that, these robust six-axle locomotives with their distinctive front ends performed countless pusher duties on the steep inclines of the low mountain ranges, such as on the Geislinger Steige, which will celebrate 175 years of rail traffic in 2025. In addition to their pusher duties there, which ended in 1987, the Class 194 locomotives were also assigned more leisurely tasks in local passenger service. These heavyweights suddenly found themselves pulling n-type coaches, better known as "Silberlinge" (silver coaches), because their bodies were made of brushed stainless steel and featured a striking, silvery-shimmering peacock eye pattern. Between 1958 and 1980, around 5,000 of these locomotives were produced. Later, they received the current DB Regio livery. Today, they are no longer in service. All the more reason to enjoy seeing a Class 194 locomotive pulling two or three "Silberling" coaches on the layout. Just like back then on the Geislinger Steige.
