As early as the 1920s, the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) decided to electrify the most important lines as quickly as possible. Specifically for the steep mountain gradients, the seven mountain express locomotives of the 1100 series (designated as the 1089 series by the ÖBB), developed according to Swiss models, were delivered to the ÖBB in 1923/24. These 20,350 mm long locomotives consisted of two close-coupled bogies, on which a short engine bridge with transformer, sliding switchgear, and two driver's cabs was articulatedly mounted. Due to their long, low, and narrow hoods on the bogies, the name "Crocodile" quickly became established, and these locomotives looked the most "crocodile-like" of all the "crocodiles." Since they proved highly successful, nine replicas were delivered in 1926/27 as 1100.101-109 (ÖBB: 1189.01-09), which, due to a modified gearbox ratio, achieved a higher speed and were equipped with more powerful motors. Prototype: Class 1189 "Austrian Crocodile" electric locomotive of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB). Blood orange livery. Road number 1189.02. Operating condition mid/late 1970s. Model: With mfx+ digital decoder and extensive sound and light functions. Controlled high-efficiency propulsion with flywheel, centrally mounted. Two driving wheels in each of the two bogies are driven via cardan shafts.
